FURNACE were a three-piece hardcore band from Massachusetts that released between 2006 and 2010, for the most part. The noisy, thick, sludgy and abrasive music didn't really evolve all that much, but the hardcore certainly tries on a few masks that toys with post-hardcore, doom and metallic hardcore, to name a few. They released a bunch of stuff in those five years including their 'Instrumental Demo', 'L'Antietam split', the self titled 'Furnace' 7", their split 7" with 'Relics', the sole full length called 'Doublewalker' and their final 7" 'Capsule split', as well as a few demos and unmastered stuff that they divvied out in 2011 (the 'Unreleased' digital single "Banner 18") and 2012 ('3-Song Teaser (rough mixes)') which does seem even heavier and thicker than their previous endeavors. Their final full length was never fully recorded but apparently it was written and abandoned save for the four songs released in 2011-2012.

FURNACE sounds like a few bands, Perth Express, Protestant, The Setup, Weak Teeth, Trainwreck, Tigershark and Lentic Waters seem like the most likely candidates as all have that crusty, sludgy metallic hardcore sound that can pick up the pace to the point of reaching screamo speed. They utilize at least two vocalists that trade off with screams of slightly differing depths, but both are definitely on their way to demonic sounding although they never reach growls. My personal favourite recording by the band was their 2006 'Gravity Distortion Time Displacement Unit' cdr that I picked up from god knows where. It has the five tracks from the 2007 'Furnace' 7" as well as an additional song called "I Rest Easy, Your Ship has Sailed" which is a fucking banger and also appears on the 'L'Antietam split' 7". My personal favourite by the band is "Astronaut", which is the perfect mix of heavy and fast without giving anyone whiplash, and dark, heaving breakdowns. If you jam just one make it this, as the prodigious riffs and tearing vocals rip through 2:40 of Tigershark and The Setup sounding sludgy hardcore, screamo and some metal that shines through starting at 52 seconds with a phenomenal breakdown that would make the Germans in Lentic WatersPerth Express and Trainwreck stand up and applaud. You might think the song is done at two minutes, but you'd be dead fucking wrong because another sick, swirling breakdown takes hold and strangles out any remaining life before feedback washes away the song's lifeless body.
