Let's start this batch of June mix reviews off on the right foot - with a band whose name I've heard so seldom that...well, I guess I've never heard anyone say this band name before. It's my goal to change that, because if you like the bands listed above then I guarantee this band will soon be in heavy rotation - errr...digitation...mp3ification - never mind.

FINGER OF GOD was a very rare band (like a jewel-encrusted scorpion that tells jokes) that skimmed across the epic-instrumetal genre for a very brief period, but managed to release one the most massive (and obscure) eps that I've ever had the priviledge of hearing. They released their debut in 2005, the 'Release the Wolves' LP and recorded 2 demos that are available on their MySpace page - and then disappeared off the face of the planet.

FINGER OF GOD's musical styling ranges from calm to crushing - cradling and dangling the listener from start to finish. There are no vocals but a damn-ass lot of chugging breakdowns layered with pretty clean riffs. If you know Pelican, then you know exactly what I'm talking about. The band also dabbles in some Neil Perry-improv sounding riffs, Mare horror movie-guitars (at the 4-minute mark of "I Bleed Scorpions") and even some beautiful Old Man Gloom-esque western acoustic serenades (like the one that pops up at the 3-minute mark of "The History of One Tough Motherfucker").

This is one obscure band that I know epic-instrumetal fans will appreciate. So appreciate the shit out of that ep, because it's one amazing motherfucker.
