In my final years of University I met a long lost friend of my brother's, who, it turns out, loved screamo. This was in about 2003 or 2004 and I shit my pants as he was the first person I had ever met that knew about bands such as Off Minor and Saetia (who I was hard into at the time...and still am!). We gushed over Funeral Diner right before he mentioned a band called LOVE LOST BUT NOT FORGOTTEN (LLBNF). I heard a song and was mightily impressed, but upon remembering to check them out, I fucked up and checked out A Life Once Lost, most likely because the name is semi-similar but also because Justin Graves of Neil Perry fame drummed for them so I assumed that was the band my friend showed me. Oops. Fast forward to 2014 and Old Soul sends me their final mixes for the Lentic Waters split 12" and I hear this cover of "Perfectly Fucked" from LLBNF and realize I must have made a grave error. I downloaded the discography and here we are today on October 2nd 2015 and I'm smitten.

LOVE LOST BUT NOT FORGOTTEN were fucking crazy. There is no other way to put it. From 1999 until 2002 the Missouri band released two pummeling LPs that take emo-violence and metallic hardcore to a nearly comical level of noise. 2000s 'Love Lost But Not Forgotten' self titled cd is the textbook definition of cacophony, which I now realize is a term that I've grossly overused, because LLBNF harnesses the chaotic, supersaturated ridiculousness and plays it out in a way that only bands such as In Loving Memory, Yusuke, (old) Examination Of The... and Advocate have been able to pull off. The amount of dual screaming spills out of the speakers in seemingly random bursts and overwhelms the listener at first, but upon repeat listens the complicated and passionate vocals are one of the keys to unlocking the mystery of each song's structure, as the drums are so fucking crazy that it's easy to get lost in the chaos. The closer "Swallow" is uncharacteristic of the band and has them pulling out a nice, slower jam that might have been a better opener than closer, but who the fuck am I to judge?

2002's 'Upon the Right, I Saw a New Misery' is crazy but in a much more controlled and refined way. Songs such as "Perfectly Fucked", "In Typical Fashion" and "It Never Happened" are prime examples of the steps forward taken by the band. If you like your screamo with a myriad of screamers you best take a stab at the self titled LP first, as this record is primarily a sole screamer record which causes the intensity and general insanity to be subdued, at least slightly. This is in no way a slight, as the refined sound works out really well and gives us another angle's view of the band and their craft. Take the end of the closer "Nobody's Watching Department 23", the melodic approach to the guitars and focused, repetitive screams are an evolution simply not found on the band's debut . This was the album that convinced me that LLBNF was a great band and led to me track down the self titled cd and thus write this review.

I'd highly recommend downloading the LP discography that I've posted because it's killer. I'm not too sure about the other releases, but think that the songs from the non-LPs ended up on the LPs, maybe the only difference is that they are demo versions. Regardless here is pretty much the entire LOVE LOST BUT NOT FORGOTTEN discography. Enjoy annihilating your stereocilia, my friends.
