For fans of: Jeromes Dream, Ice Hockey, Deadseraphim, Phoenix BodiesHospitalsWow, Owls!, мища, Loma Prieta, Lord Snow, Tentacles, Kodan Armada, Francis Brady, The Third Memory, Me And Him Call It Us, L'Antietam, Clancy 6, Loftus, Louise Cyphre, Republic Of Dreams, CassilisMakara, The Blood Brothers, Usurp Synapse, Maximillian Colby and La Quiete aka PROPER Screamo.

I've got back into a huge MARA'AKATE kick after listening to Ice Hockey's latest EP, which I reviewed yesterday. This one-two punch was no accident. If you stripped away most of the slower melodies and replaced them with spastic, A-D-D riffing and lyrics about permutations and globules (and who knows what else) then this is what you'd be left with.

In 2002, the vocalist Josh really changed his style from over the top banshee screaming (see Clancy 6 and Loftus) to a coarse yell with the occasional scream. In these early years, MARA'AKATE was reminiscent of bands like Jeromes Dream, Tentacles, Loma Prieta and Me And Him Call It Us. The less abrasive vocals changed in and matched the instrumentals that also shifted a bit, as they slowed down and may very well have influenced the likes of Wow, Owls!, L'Antietam and other garage rock oriented screamo bands. The later material sounds like the 2 previous bands as well as Rye Coalition, Maximillian Colby, Secret Smoker, The Blood Brothers and Usurp Synapse all rolled into one.

Besides from downloading the band's discography that I have posted, I would also strongly recommend getting your hands on MARA'AKATE's 'Congratulations On Your Impending Geography' tour dvd. It really shows you some funny clips, amazing sets and includes a butt-load of live songs from other bands such as Off Minor, Francis Brady, Yage, etc. I hope this gets more people into this band. It's kinda like Lord Snow, but a little less crazy.
