MACHINA GENOVA are a band I can credit my bandmate Chris Story for introducing me to. On tour he asked me if I knew any Australian screamo bands and I was only able to come up with Blind Girls, Diploid and The Eucalypt. He replied with, "the only one I know of is Machina Genova, you know them?" to which I answered no. So we did a podcast (linked here) with our other bandmate Jesse and Chris played the opening song from their primary release, and it blew our fucking minds.

MACHINA GENOVA's releases spanned five years but only contained a total of 11 songs. It is the 2013 10" titled 'Weathered Heart' which is the home to six of these pummeling, unrelenting, blistering, venomous and screamy, metallic hardcore gems. The release begins with the unbelievable "Courtaud" which goes apeshit from the get-go. In a mere 1:45 the band shreds through grindy, dark and repulsive screamy hardcore like veterans, with the climax hitting only 45 seconds in using a breakdown and a little solo riff to completely hook the listener. When "Funeral March" hits you'll probably be short of breath, so the 2:26 seems longer than it is simply because the listener is likely winded. The scathing vocals continue, falling somewhere between screechy grind and lower end screamy growl which can be likened to bands such as Litany For The Whale, Dangers! and Back When. "Old Hands" follows as the shortest song released by the band at 1:08, but that doesn't mean you won't be crushed into a pulpy mess by the time it ends. The longest track begins the second half of the album, and "Blood Red Moon" does so by dragging out the sound in slower, plodding, epic and thick post-hardcore/metalcore fashion which reminds me most of Llynch and Litany For The Whale, two other massively underappreciated bands. "Euphoria" leads into the finale as track five and is as poisonous as music can get which is reminiscent of early Buried Inside's 'Suspect Symmetry' material. I think of newer bands such as Lamantide, The Armed and Barque will get a kick out of this song, especially, as this shit is really fucking heavy. with snarling vocals. "Illuminate" is the closer of 'Weathered Heart' and does not disappoint. After an atmospheric opening the track really kicks in at 1:30 and rides a wave of I Am A Curse into an echoing horizon.

Because of this review, I ended up unearthing a 2011 demo cd and 2015 final digital tracks which I have included in the discography download. The material is also excellent, although the demo certainly shows more of their metal side and pales in comparison to the final two tracks called "Fear and Pestilence" (a one-minute tear through The Armed territory) and "Terminal" (the audio equivalent of a chainsaw to the eardrum).

So, in conclusion, this shit is sick. Considering I only found out about the band in mid-August, I've already jammed that 10" at least ten times...which is one listen per inch. If you like your hardcore very screamy, fast and devastating...tis a great day for you.
