BELOVED were a band that I was pretty into back in the early 2000s when I was exiting my sing/scream phase of Poison The Well, Hopesfall, Boy Sets Fire and In Reverent Fear. This album is a very decent example of how to do it right, mixing both melodic emo/post-hardcore and clean singing with semi-glossy metallic hardcore breakdowns and bellowing. I find myself hesitant to pin a definitive tag on this band, or to say that they were one of the better ones. They were good, I can attest to that much.

Both 'The Running' EP and 'Failure On' LP contain the same style of music with some production progression but generally very similar. From the EP, "Kiss It Goodbye" and "The Blue Period" are the tops for me, clashing the soft with hard and are responsible for me getting into the band back in 2001-2002. The singer never really hits anything upper register as he is coarse and close to yelling, but he maintains excellent control over his voice and creates some really catchy melodies that mesh perfectly with the softer parts of the music. "Going Through the Motions" is another great track from the EP that I shouldn't forget to mention which showcases a fantastic breakdown outro with extremely passionate vocals. From 'Failure On' creates some really thick, pummeling double-bass pedal breakdowns "Failure on my Lips" is a prime example at 1:35. Before that you wouldn't be crazy in assuming you are listening to sappy mall-emo. "Death to Traitors" is my personal favourite, as it spans 6:40 and palm-mutes its way through the opening before dismantling the listener with a chuggy breakdown and desperately upset vocals at the 1:31-mark, "this time it's now or never!". The melodic singing in this song is spot on and borders on a darker fringe with the chorus being the strongest the band ever did. "Defect from Decay" and "Inner Pattern" are both much shorter affairs and follow the same path of singing and spiderweb guitars leading to destruction and then back out again - and they kick major ass. "Watching the Lines Blur" has some pretty decent double bass and deep, gutteral screams.

I've posted their audio discography for download for anyone who is enticed but doesn't have the stuff. There's also a live DVD of their last show that I couldn't find a torrent of, so I haven't seen it nor can I post it.
