YURODIVY sent me their new album 'Aphos' only a month or two ago and I was instantly hooked. Considering I love bands such as The ArmedRemoteCassilis and Colored Moth it is no wonder this French band tickled my fancy.

In 2014 they self released 'The Valley of Elah' on their own label called Itawak Records but the album seems to have been pulled from the internet. The same label released the followup in 2015 titled 'When Deep Waters...' which has also been pulled, but all of these are the first four tracks from 'Aphos'. So...let's just talk about 'Aphos'.

'Aphos' was officially released in February of 2017 and contains a total of 11 songs, with the final 7 being new. "Six Feet Under Water" opens the record and does a decent job of showcasing what the band sounds like and can accomplish (bearing a very strong resemblance to The Armed), but it isn't until tracks five and six when the floodgates truly open. Said tracks are titled "Now You Can Feed The Monster" but are broken up into parts "1" and "2". "Now You Can Feed The Monster Part1" is the shorter of the two at 2:30 and begins with a chill riff that could have ended up on A Day In Black And White's early output or the active band We Watch Clouds. After two minutes of eerie, dark, bassy and twinkly atmospheric post-rock, everything aligns and the vocals kick in screaming. I imagine seeing this live would be mesmerizing. "Now You Can Feed The Monster Part2" continues on, in a sense, as it begins full tilt with scathing vocals and dense guitars. After a slowdown they pick up the groove section at one minute and then bury the listener under Blacklisters-esque, noisy hardcore that dips in and out of sanity. At 3:17 the song transitions back to "Part1"'s epic, swirling instrumentals but adds a layer of death and destruction that snaps the song in two like a broken neck at 4:15. Other notable tracks include "The Way of the Light", "Children of the Sun", "In the Violence of the Ashes" and "Genesis 1.6".

This is seriously a very good album (or two EPs) and is worth checking out. I'll have an ear to the ground regarding their next release, that's for sure.
