PLUUM is a new band from Montreal in Québec on the east side of Canada. They just released a 3-song demo EP called 'Pluum' and will be playing in Toronto (linked here) but I can't go due to a Big Dick concert in Hamilton. Anyway, to PLUUM. They play groooving screamo/post-hardcore with some 90s alternative/grunge residue that is thick enough to slow down the pace enough to pretty much take all but remove the screamo aspect, except perhaps the vocals. The band hits their stride in pretty much every song, with "You're Waving at Me" standing out as an excellent example. The song employs the softer, subdued approach which bodes quite well for the band as well as good hard parts like the climax which is situated, oddly enough, at the end of the track. "Monday" has serious 80s The Cure and The Smiths overtones with Hum seeming like the primary influence. I also hear hints of The Used screamy vocals, not a knock, but this isn't too far from said band's debut self title LP, which is a guilty pleasure of mine. The closer "Being Busy" is my least favourite but doesn't sound too far off from "Monday" in it's very rigid song structure and throwback 80s and 90s feel.
