C'EST UREKHA! seems to be pretty darn obscure. All I know is what my friend Gareth Lloyd told me and the sounds that I hear. Well, first, the four tracks on this demo are all about a minute or two long. The band plays dark, seething, chaotic and screamy hardcore from Malaysia. The demo was released on cd in 2008 via the label Internationale. The only reason I know about C'EST UREKHA! is because they were brought to my attention when Gareth passed off some extra screamo memorabilia which included this cd. I jammed it, became smitten, and then pressed him for more info, which he responded quickly with the review he wrote for it way back in 2009 (linked here).

So, the music. 'Demo' begins with "Badly Disorganized" with driving and screamy hardcore that sounds as if Anger Is Beautiful and Yusuke are duking it out in raging screamy hardcore/emo-violence fashion. "This is Urekha! Who Care?" is the shortest track at 58 seconds, and more than obviously packs the densest punch. The shrieky vocals and rampant instrumentals remind me a lot of new bands such as Saligia and Bethari as well as your older screamy stuff from the likes of Francis Brady and Makara. "Damn Unsatisfied" follows and is likely my favourite of the four, as the stop/start guitars and flurry of drums get your attention like a fresh slap to the face. The whirlwind of screams and sick midsection/breakdown remind me of Carol and Carl Johnson, which is a hellish, powerful and commanding style of dark hardcore/powerviolence/emo-violence. Closer "Wrinkle Paper" is the longest and most epic offering on the EP (and discography, to my knowledge). Clocking in at 2:37, it opens with towering riffs and fantastic vocals and rides this wave all the way through with minor shifts and variations, but the song is basically one big section that retains its sound and fierce animosity throughout its tenure.

The only complaint I have that is legitimate (too short is not an actual complaint) happens to be the same as Gareth's, and that is a very poor sound on the snare drum, like it's distant and possibly being played on a bursting garbage can. Otherwise, this sounds fucking stellar and I can't believe how little there is on the internet about it. Guess I'll just have to upload the whole thing to youtube. 😏
