For fans ofWolf Teeth, Loma Prieta, Eyes Of Verotika, D'Amore, Youth Novel, Youth Funeral, People's Temple Project, Gaff, Foxmoulder, Furtive Forest, Dear Tonight, GRYSCL, and Kodan Armada aka PROPER SCREAMO.

How often do you see a post on fb or whatever and the band looks like they could be decent or mediocre? It happens to me all the time and as I'm already submerged in a ridiculous amount of music I generally have to pass. I took a shot for some unknown reason when I came across PAPER SKELETONS on a facebook group somewhere and I was rewarded for doing so, cuz 'There is No Comfort' is a great album and superb debut.

Coincidentally, I didn't realize until doing back to back posts of Wolf Teeth and PAPER SKELETONS that both bands share many of the same qualities. I've found PAPER SKELETONS' "for fans of" list to be pretty weak mainly because they have a very distinct sound, which Wolf Teeth apparently share, making it a duostinct sound. Basically, there are occasional fits of positivity and playful riffing, but generally the band plays dark, gloomy and claustrophobic screamy hardcore with a rough edge that doesn't rely on speed to be heavy or hard hitting.

The instrumentals are decent, especially that distorted and damaging bass, but the injections of Kodan Armada-esque clean sections on guitar really get this reviewer in a good mood. As for the centerpiece, the vocalist, he uses a part sing, part talk and part scream thing (especially in "Hymn") that is really cool and ends up sounding extremely honest and passionate, while retaining heaviness as well as a catchy melody.

Speaking of "Hymn" it's definitely one of the best tracks on the album. The band builds a great setting to gradually build to some explosive moments that the vocalist utilizes to his advantage. The slow passage that begins at 1:12 sounds a heck of a lot like Furtive Forest as I picture dense, swampy forests filled with bats in the daytime. That strange analogy means it's good. Really, really good.

"Deconstruction" begins with some uncharacteristic (but amazing) dual screaming and chaos before slowing down to a snail's pace that is graced with bass (say that three times fast) amidst dispersed screaming. The track eventually breaks down and ends as a wall of reformed noise.

"Unfamiliar Ceilings" is a very aggressive song that brings some other bands to mind, but for the life of me I can't think of who. City Of Caterpillar? Orchid? Nah, not really. I just know it's a pounding, thumping and screeching piece of screamy hardcore and it's fucking awesome.

Don't sleep on this band, I'm highly anticipating their next release.

For fans ofPaper Skeletons, La Dispute, Wet Petals, The Saddest Landscape, Fear Before The March Of Flames, Transistor Transistor, Crestfallen, Locktender and Voyage In Coma aka PROPER SCREAMO.

WOLF TEETH has a name that pretty much describes the band. They bare everything quite openly with gushing, desperate, venomous screams that deal with the mistreatment of women, addiction, broken homes, abuse, self-loathing ... some of which I can certainly relate to. The instrumentals are much more difficult to pin down but are certainly interesting and help to create a polished yet very rustic feel, especially with the guitars.

We've got to start with the end of "Mother and the Gun" because it's just heart wrenching with kind of a Fear Before The March Of Flames take on the vocals, "Mother pull the shotgun out of your mouth. I know it's hard to live with three ungrateful kids, you told us." This is also my favourite song from the EP because the screams are just so damn passionate and instrumentally is the most honed. "It Started With A Whisper" is another good example of seething revulsion decked out in hardcore and it happens to be the opening track. "Hidden Beneath the Floorboards of a House" is a quiet, subdued number that leads into "Wooden Spoons" which will tear you a new one with some Locktender instrumentals and Crestfallen vocals that cry out, "My brother tried to hang himself before he was even born. I think he was on to something." The fourth track "Could Have Been" is another soft one with screamed vocals and reminds me of La Dispute's better (aka older) material with the meandering but catchy vocal delivery and soothing post-rock instrumentals.

"Arcarsenal" was recorded along with two other tracks that I've been lucky enough to hear and they're much more versatile and eclectic without losing their edge, but as of this point not released. The cover is obviously the opening track on At The Drive In's monumental 'Relationship of Command' and it holds up surprisingly well considering what an ATDI fan I am. The screaming is really high pitched, much more so than the previous EP. The guitars are relatively bare but encompass exactly what they need to in order to project their influences and hold the song together.

While most bands emulate another band during their early years, WOLF TEETH do the complete opposite and has already etched a sound that is unique and captivating at the same time. The band has gone through a few line up changes but have kept core member Eddy, thank science. That guy rules. Can't wait to see what concoction is cooked up with new members!

TRUMAN play dark, caustic screamo with dreamy instrumentals that go from eerie to batshit crazy in a heartbeat. They hail from Richmond, Virginia and definitely slip into the kind of sound that the area is getting known for. They may only be a 4-piece with 1 guitar, but the dual vocals and impending, claustrophobic veil of noise would lead one to believe otherwise.

TRUMAN didn't hit their stride until the 'Tape' release, but I must say the 'Ikebana' takes that momentum and straps a goddamn rocket to it. I personally find the 'Truman' release aka the early stuff to be much too loose and tends to be more bass driven, which is cool and all but the swirling guitars are much more engaging on the second and third releases. I will admit that "Lamplighter" is pretty darn good, but a large reason may be due to the fact that it has a Punishment Park audio clip on repeat at the end, Mad props for that. If I had to liken the release to another band I'd mention Foxmoulder's early material, but that's probably a stretch with the exception of "Euler's Circuit".

Here's what I wrote after hearing their 2-song 'Tape', which isn't as accurate after reading it now - but whatever.
"I love when bands I've never heard of send me stuff and it just kills me. TRUMAN is one of those bands. I sat on the email because I was busy, and now I'm kicking myself for doing so. These Richmond, Virginia boys have created 2 more than decent screamy hardcore tracks that were right up my alley. The screaming is hoarse, thick and very engaging, along with the jazzy stops and starts as well as the wailing spacey guitars that bands such as Swan Of Tuonela, Dolcim and Rats Into Robots use(d). Some parts are very bass heavy such as 4-minute mark or so of "And Between The Wasteland And The Sky". In addition, both tracks also delve into an what I like to call Intronaut-sounding porno bass, at times. There are vocals that turn almost black-metal but generally its throaty yet screamy and the instrumental backing also incorporates clean screamo parts that all really fucking work. Highly recommended!!!"

On 'Ikebana' the band gets stupid. Like, stupid good. "Chrysanthemum" gets pretty gosh darn Swan Of Tuonela if you ask me, which is why it's one of my personal favourites. It's really heavy but has some ridiculously amazing slow parts such as the Storm The Bastille and Kodan Armada sounding clean/distorted back-and-forth that begins at 35 seconds and continues until about 1:20 when Welcome The Plague Year and Swan Of Tuonela dense atmospherics kick in. "A Dim Light Amidst the Darkness of Despair" begins with an ominous guitar riff that cycles a few times until 32 seconds in when the instruments crash together. At 1:10 it slows down again and sounds like it could have come from an old Loma Prieta record, or perhaps even Kodan Armada, and the end culminates in some of the band's best and most driving work. "Dark Moon" is also worth mentioning as the entire intro screams Joshua Fit For Battle and Storm The Bastille with those goddamn beautiful instrumentals. Ahhhhh the screamo sound with no screaming.

Get on this, seriously. Amazing stuff.

DODA LOV are a band that are quite obviously rooted deeply in Swedish screamo. I first heard their debut 2-song digital release titled 'Du och Jag' and was impressed at how much they showcased with only four minutes of material. Years later the band sent me their new 5-song EP 'Allt Vi Har Kvar' and the progression was instantly noticeable. Whether influenced by Vi Som Alskade Varandra Sa Mycket and Via Fondo or not, the resemblance in undeniable - and that's a hell of a compliment because those are two of my favourite bands. Over their 7 total songs they weave a nice mix of slow-yet-big, ambient, jammy rock with screamed/yelled vocals that sound very similar to Vi Som. I am very interested to hear what they release next. Strongly recommended if you love the Swedish screamo influx of the last few years.

DOWNFALL OF GAIA has been dropping massive epic, doomy hardcore/metal since 2013. Rarely do they have songs under five minutes and those long tracks don't drag on or have silly half-track interludes. If you are a fan of bands such as Buried Inside, Anodes, Light Bearer and Cult Of Luna you should be all over this. This band doesn't blow me away but if the aforementioned bands haven't satiated your appetite for this style of music then I would highly recommend these German fellas because they know what they're doing and they do it well. Their name is derived from the Greek Goddess of the Earth and most likely pertains to the absolute clusterfuck of a job we've done with our home.

For fans ofExplosions In The Sky, The Pax Cecilia, Angel Eyes, Aporia, Envy, Sinking Steps, Rising Eyes, Ira, Gantz, Respire, Rosetta, Godspeed You Black Emperor, Mogwai and Elliot.

124C41+ may be a weird band name that made me expect to hear electronic music, but when Omar from the band sent me their songs I was caught by surprise. The combination of piano/classical music with the post-hardcore culminates in some serious waves of euphoria. The music is both sparse and dense depending on the section of the song. I was actually surprised when the vocals kicked in during song two "Tagma 2" but it turned out to be the highlight of the album. The earnest and distant screams echo long after they finish and are a great accompaniment which I believe should be utilized more often.

"Tagma 1" is the only short track on the EP, clocking in at 4 minutes exactly. Don't expect to rock the fuck out or to hear vocals here, this is an ambient, piano driven song that sets the tone for the larger, more engaging tracks that follow. It's not bad, but it's not great. Some additional instrumentation is heard for a few brief seconds at 1:40 and again at 2:15 which brings the drums and bass in to close out the track.

"Tagma 2" begins as a continuation of track one but morphs into a much different beast. The piano and instrumental build climb until just before the two-minute mark when the vocals kick in for the first time and really garner some attention, not only because they weren't heard in the previous track, but because they fit really well with the music and remind me of Envy. If you check anything out by the band definitely make it this one. I think the closest comparison here is Respire with less vocals and piano instead of trumpet or a less screamy Sinking Steps, Rising Eyes.

"Tagma 3" is the most atmospheric of all the songs. Taking some nods from the first track, these subtle melodies are buried beneath a blanket of noise but are still audible as they mix together like paint and create a trippy, dreamy fog that builds from 4:50 and cracks at 5:40 when vocals rip through briefly and shake the comforting wall of ambiance.

Good stuff. I'm interested to hear what's next.

BIRCH sent me their first self titled EP a few months ago and I was fucking blown away. Seriously, all math-metal and Botch fans in particular get ready for your new dose. The spastic, coordinated bombshells explode all over the place in each of the tracks. The relentless assault and pursuing mind fuck that accompanies the debut EP are much welcomed by this, still rabid, Botch fan. "Rorschach" wastes no time overloading the ears with mathy riffs and breakdowns and frantic, rabid, harsh yelling - none of which give any time to dream for the duration of the song. "36 Views of Mt. Fuji" is amazing. Swirling instrumentals simultaneously pummel the listener and are definitely a mix of Botch and Norma Jean. At points the band is obviously worshipping Botch as the snarling and rearing guitars lash out much akin to "Transitions From Persona to Object" from Botch's masterpiece 'We Are the Romans'. "Violence in it's Quietest From" doesn't stray too far from the same homage as it also includes the squealing instrumental bouts amidst throaty screams and breakdowns. "Shades of Red & Oil" has mad Knut going on during last half. Disjointed, chaotic and short, this blistering number is over almost as soon as it begins at a light 1:23. The weakest track is still a really good one, as "Weltschmertz (Tabula Rasa)" breaks down to a crawl halfway through and lends itself to Botch and Converge's slower, jammy material.

This debut is easily one of the best EPs of 2015. Shit's gettin' real this year, goddamn.

POTENCE had me at "Daïtro vocalist". No one mentioned, however, that this band is much thicker, darker and heavier than Daïtro. Think along the same lines but angry, urgent and violent. POTENCE is crunchy but not in an overproduced way, as if anything this is a little underproduced. The songs are generally thick and sludgy with additional speed added by the drummer. There are sections of mildly slower, melodic stuff that makes the occasional appearance (such as during "Le Discours De Ta Méthode" at 40 seconds in) but this is definitely a crust/hardcore band.

"L'Amour Au Temps De La Peste" is my personal favourite as it starts with lulling guitars that hover like a cloud for 30 seconds until the vocals rain down along with those extra few notes of "bow-oo-ow-oo-ahhh". The ultimate is the Mihai Edsrich/Suffocate For Fuck Sake driven injection that starts at 1:04 with some entrancing guitar chords that lead back into the headbanging chorus. It gets me every time. "Aimer, Mourir Jeune et Faire Un Beau Cadavre" is another killer track that boasts some sweet guitar work spliced between heavy bouts of raw, sludgy chugging.

I assume they are gearing up for a new record sometime soon and I'm psyched beyond belief. Best demo of 2015? Probably.

During the following month, I will post reviews for those bands and link the tracks to the review so you can associate the two together. This way you can listen to a new song/band and have little-to-no bias. Below, I have re-posted the July mp3 mix that is used for this month's reviews.

The new OMSB mp3 Mix #8 will be reviewed in August and the 12 songs are all bangers, such as:
*-* a band that has a new 2x7"LP coming out... ;)
*-* Bright Calm Blue's old band that was almost as good
*-* some 18-year olds that created some insane mathy hardcore/metal
*-* an instrumental math-rock band that eventually turned into...Russian Circles!
*-* an insanely influential French band that played ridiculous screamo with the prettiest soft bits

Any bands/labels that are interested in having their stuff reviewed, please email zegemabeachrecords@gmail.com: with "Open Mind Saturated Brain" as the subject. Please keep in mind that I don't review everything, just what jives with the blog. I will, however, listen to everything you send me.

For fans ofSeyarse, Craneo, Anger Is BeautifulSwan Of Tuonela, Ruptures, Jeanne, Yusuke, Loma Prieta, Means To An End, Tetola93, Danse Macabre, Descrubriendo A Mr. Mime, A Company Of Heroes, Converge, Orchid, Takaru, Kodan Armada, Dispensing Of False Halos, A Light In The Attic, Towers and Virginia On Duty aka PROPER SCREAMO.

DAIGHILA is a band from Malaysia that I was told to check out just over a year ago and I finally did it. I seriously slept on these fine fellas who have put out a vast amount of releases since 2006, with most coming in 2009 and 2012. The band plays metallic, screamy hardcore punk with similarities to fellow natives Virginia On Duty as well as Seyarse, Craneo, Yusuke and Dispensing Of False Halos. The maxed out screaming, indecipherable banshee calls but hot damn it just fits so well and definitely nods to emoviolence more than any other genre. The instrumentals mix punk, hardcore, metal, thrash and screamo in a goddamn blender before regurgitating it all back up in the slurry that is DAIGHILA, and it's amazing.

The first few releases in 2006 and 2007 are pretty similar sounding to later material in that they're all pretty goddamn good. From the 'Demo' tracks like "I Am The Witness Of The Wreckoning Of Your Empire" scream Tetola93 and Dispensing Of False Halos, especially with those metal-driven guitar romps and blazing Converge speed mixed with Fall Of Troy riffing. From 'Miscellaneous' the song "Sulking Hands" is the standout, bearing some exceptional vocal delivery and spacey post-hardcore jaunt that starts 50 seconds in and the explosive finale. "Inculpable" resides on the 'Henceforth' EP released in 2009 and really brings European screamo like Louise Cyphre to mind.

From the 'Circuits split' tape, "Hunt" begins and I think I'm listening to the softer parts of Kodan Armada, only to have it eventually shift to emoviolence that definitely brings Virginia On Duty to mind. At 3:49 the songs has an Old Man Gloom part straight outta 'Meditations in B' that leads to a nice little riffbomb at the end. From the 'Fanzui Xiangfa split' 7" both "Opportunist's Agenda" and "Inquisition" are killer tracks that balance a lot more melody that most of the band's material. "Contentment" can be found on the 'This Is Atlantis split' 7" as well as the 'Transitions' cd and is a phenomenal song with one of the most driving forces the band has mustered to date and would probably please fans of Loma Prieta and Swan Of Tuonela. 'Transistions' pretty much contains everything they recorded from 2009 to 2012 except for the 'Miscellaneous' cdr, 'Grinding Halt split' 7" and 'Pazahora split' tape although bandcamp reads that the 'Transitions' cd is 14 tracks and includes those two splits, but I only have 9. Weird.

Lastly, the band also told me that they will be releasing a new record in the near future that they will most likely be releasing by themselves (as I was trying to help out with the North America side via Zegema Beach Records). This band is that good. Don't sleep on them like I did. Huge mistake.

For fans ofRocky Votolato, Canvas, Desaparacidos, Nada Surf, Sunny Day Real Estate, Weezer, Cursive, Sharks Keep Moving, Moving Mountains, and Attack In Black.

WAXWING were an odd sound. Not that it is elusive or weird, but the creation by these four gentlemen from about 1999-2002 is in a league all it's own. The sound is expertly crafted, doused in originality and accessible as all hell. Rocky Votolato, who is widely known for his solo material and brother Cody from The Blood Brothers, Neon Blonde and Jaguar Love, among a plethora of other associated bands got back together at the beginning/middle of 2013, but I guess that never came to fruition as the band released nothing. Regardless, their material demands a listen.

Beginning chronologically is the 'Intervention' 7" which not surprisingly includes the track "Intervention" that is an amazing start. The song dips between the serene, dark and intoxicating slow bits and post-hardcore/aggressive alternative.

The band's debut LP 'For Madmen Only' is a decent album but one I couldn't get into as much as the latter two full lengths. "CornerStore" is the only song that really rings like future WAXWING. The barely audible, hushed singing starts things off with those entrancing guitars that act like spiderwebs before exploding during the chorus, along with Rocky's early take on raspier, heavier singing.

'One For the Ride' is amazing. Seriously. The first two tracks solidify this as one of the greatest emo/rock/alternative albums ever. No argument. Starting with "All of My Prophets" the band is able to perfectly harness the soft, dreamy, emotional arrangements with some cracking alternative rock. "One For the Ride" is a sing along masterpiece. Imagine Rocky Votolato's 'Suicide Medicine' with a backing band and you're already there. There's a reason why it's the title track - because it's fucking amazing. "Where Did the Time Go?" is a slow, brooding, almost dancey affair which boasts some great guitars during the intro that will no doubt get your head boppin'. "There Will Be a Reckoning" is the country tune but at 2:38 it flips back to 90s rock for a brief moment before delving further into almost Helmet-esque territory with some heavy riffing. This heavier, punkier second half comes with an accompanying wailing Rocky Votolato. "Blue Days and Green Nights" is the penultimate slow, beautiful and haunting track on here. It's not unlike "Where Did the Time Go?" in it's restrained power shrouded in sweet, soft lullabies. Saving the best for last, "Laboratory" is my WAXWING jam, no question. The build in this song is fucking epic and it's the best example of the band's myriad influences and polished songwriting style. Honestly, if you listen to any track make it this beauty.

The band's final venture 'Nobody Can Take What Everybody Owns' is a little more aggressive but also hints much  more obviously at Rocky's country and folk roots. It's a great album but may not reach the pedestal that I've had 'One For the Ride' on for the last 15 years. It opens with "Everything's On Fire" which is definitely one of the stronger efforts WAXWING crafted. Warbly as his voice may be, the lyrics and powerful placement by Rocky along with very driving instrumentals that rise and fall, although probably fall directly into the harder category. "Colour" is a poppier track that reminds me a lot more of 'One For the Ride', hot damn just listen to the high pitched/bubble gum vocal injection at 30 seconds in and the extremely infectious chorus. "Place Called Houston" has a heavier country feel to the intro but at 0:42 the song slows down and darkens to the point where it's classic WAXWING. "Records" is a really cool song that suffers from attention deficit disorder as it jumps all over the place. Soft parts, fast parts, hand clapping, bouncy parts and sing-alongs. The "Untitled Track" aids in showing off Rocky Votolato's range of emotion-packed singing over a piano before the guitar licks slide in just after 1:10. This is probably a cover of something, but holy moly it packs a punch.

WAXWING truly defies conventions and fall into a category by themselves. As you'll notice the for fans of section is (again) sorely lacking here, but there's nothing save for Rocky Votolato's solo stuff and maybe Call It Arson and Canvas that comes close to sounding like WAXWING. One of my all-time favourite bands. You are truly doing yourself a disservice is you pass on this band without giving them a listen.
